Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit. Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now. Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'. But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.
Hey everyone, its Sarah and I'm back with another book review. Today's review is on A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab or as she is also known, Victoria Schwab.
A Darker Shade of Magic is a story about a magician called Kell who has the ability to travel between three worlds. Red London, where Kell lives and a place where magic thrives; Grey London, where magic has been forgotten about for centuries; White London, where magic is craved; and there is also Black London, which is believed to have been destroyed, a place not even Kell or anyone else has ever been.
The plot of this novel is simply amazing; from the moment I picked up this book I was hooked. I wasn’t able to put it down and when I had to, I wanted to pick it up again and read more. The setting, characters and twist and turns are all amazing.
The main character Kell and his companion of sorts in the story Lila are two characters I love. Their personalities are entertaining and also extremely relatable. The two are similar in many ways; both are determined and strong headed. They are both also very different, and they surprise each other at every turn. The minor characters in the story are also strong and none are lacking in any way.
Schwab’s imagination is fantastic. She has conjured up three unique worlds and put them together. The story flows using the unique features of all three worlds and I cannot help but be in awe of the amazing descriptions she uses. The details are what I would call inspiring; they make me want to write and to create an amazing world just like she has done.
This story isn’t lacking in anyway. Anyone who loves fantasy, magic and parallel worlds will enjoy this book for beginning to end and would recommend this book, just like I am. If you have yet to read this book then do because it is a book that I will love for a long time.
Overall this book is a perfect five out of five stars, if I could I would rating it infinity stars but I only have five. Schwab has done a great job and I am waiting in anticipation for the sequel next year.
But that’s all for now.
I’ll write you soon.
