For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried—some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive. Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope, the last apprentice.
Hey everyone, its Sarah and I'm back with another book review. Today's review is on The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. This book is the first book in Delaney’s The Last Apprentice series or Wardstone Chronicles’ series, whichever you prefer.
The series follows the life of Thomas Ward as he becomes the 30 apprentice of Old Gregory, who has been a Spook almost his whole life. Thomas is the seventh son of the seventh son and his father has made a deal with Gregory that Thomas will become his apprentice so that one day Thomas will become a Spook. Thomas soon learns that being a Spook forces you to face your fears and to learn quickly, also it is a lonely life, as people tend to avoid them.
The story is more a Children’s to Young Adult book; it has very simple language and is easy to read. The story is filled with great descriptions and is a very quick pace. Things turn bad quickly and I couldn’t put the book down, I was dying to know what would happen next.
I loved the characters, Old Gregory most of all. He has a quirky sense of humour and I loved every part of him in the book. The only thing that really got me down was that the story line is a little predictable, however, I think that is due to the fact that it is more for readers at the ages of 10 to 14, not someone who is 19. The rest of the book is fantastic though: the writing is great; the pace is ace and the characters, you will remember and love.
My favourite aspect of the writing though is Delaney’s descriptions of people and places. His words gave me amazing images that I loved every time, there were also a few scenes that didn’t scare me but gave me a freaky image.
The book overall is great and I can’t wait to read the second book in the series.
But that’s all for now.
I’ll write you soon.
