Sometimes, I dream that I'm someone else. A girl with dark hair who doesn't worry about hunger or thirst or running from flesh-eaters. In her world, those sorts of things don't exist. Since the spring of 2036, when the world changed forever, Claudia and a small clan of survivors have roamed the streets of a very altered Nashville: polluted and desolate, except for the ever-present threat of cannibal Hoarders. Together they must undergo punishing tests of endurance and psychological challenge sometimes with devastating consequences all just to live another day. With food and water in dwindling supply, and with danger lurking around every corner, no one can be trusted. And as her world starts to make less and less sense, Claudia begins to realize something terrifying: she is just a pawn in some sort of game, and all of her actions are being controlled from afar by a mysterious gamer. So when she meets a maddening and fascinating outsider named Declan, who claims to be a game moderator, she must decide whether to join him in exchange for protection and access to the border. If they play the game right, they are each other's best hope for survival and a life beyond the only world Claudia's ever known: the terrifying live-action game known as The Aftermath.
Hey everyone, its Sarah and I'm back with another book review. Today's review is on The Aftermath by Jen Alexander. The Aftermath is the first book published by Jen Alexander, and the first in a series.
The story follows a young woman named Claudia Virtue. She woke up three years ago in an apocalyptic world where there are clans of people fighting for their lives against human flesh eating cannibals. However, things are not what they seem and what Claudia finds out is that she is being used for someone else’s own personal gain doesn’t sit right with her and she plans to stop it.
The story idea is fantastic, its original and a great way to start a new dystopian series. I, however, have very mixed feelings when it comes to this book. There were things I loved and things I hated, I am—as they say—stuck on the fence and I don’t seem to be moving one way or the other.
I loved the characters in this book; I liked Claudia and the people around her. I like her progression through the story and how she reacts as a person would when she discovers the truth. There were some things though that I wasn’t, and still aren’t sure about with her. She doesn’t seem to have much growth as a character and I didn’t really connect with her as the main protagonist, I didn’t really seem to connect with any of the characters.
Following along with the story is really fun and easy; it was more of a bit of fun to read than something that is meant to be scary. It the book is meant to be scary than sadly Jen Alexander missed the nail. But this book doesn’t lack in fun, something is always going on and there aren’t any of those sections where the blood stops pumping, there are no big pauses in between events so there isn’t any long exposé to get bored it. It’s quick, fun and easy.
Overall I think most readers will enjoy this book, it’s even got a bit of romance for the romance fans out there. It caters to many audiences and for her first novel Jen Alexander did well.
But that’s all for now.
I’ll write you later.
